Artificial intelligence has arrived in space, from analysing vast volumes of test data to making sense of telemetry. At the same time, pressure is growing to deliver programmes faster while remaining uncompromisingly reliable. This is where a misunderstanding often arises. The key question is not how quickly maximum autonomy can be achieved. In safety critical space programmes, the real question is how AI can be used so that outcomes remain traceable, verifiable and ultimately certifiable.
