Technology group Rheinmetall has secured another major series order in the future market of electromobility. A renowned US-based high-volume passenger car manufacturer will be using contactor relays from Rheinmetall in its new 450-volt vehicle architecture. The order volume amounts to approximately €60 million (approx. 70 million USD).

Contactor relays perform safety-critical switching functions in electric vehicles: they enable the reliable switching on and off of the high-voltage system, thus ensuring safe and efficient vehicle operation—especially in emergency situations such as accidents or short circuits in the event of faults.

Rheinmetall’s contactor relays are scalable and also technically suitable for 900-volt platforms. This not only allows Rheinmetall to meet diverse customer requirements and support the rapid electrification strategies of global manufacturers, but also to successfully continue its own transformation strategy—moving away from conventional combustion engines toward electromobility.

Rheinmetall’s contactor relays are characterized by their low weight, low contact resistance, and therefore minimized power losses. They do not rely on easily volatile quenching gases, which reduces manufacturing costs and allows for a longer lifespan compared to competing products. At the same time, the special technical design permits higher ambient temperatures, significantly reduces the risk of bursting, and is resistant to the feared welding of relays in the closed position.

This additional series order underscores Rheinmetall’s growing market penetration in the field of contactor relays and strengthens its position as a reliable global systems partner for e-vehicle components.
