Elbit Systems Deutschland GmbH & Co. KG has entered into a strategic agreement with the German start-up Cucuyo GmbH and has obtained an exclusive licence to adapt Cucuyo’s advanced laser communication technology for defence applications. This grants Elbit Systems the exclusive right to use and further develop Cucuyo’s technology for military and defence-related purposes. As part of the agreement, both companies will jointly develop new products based on this technology, with ownership residing with Elbit.

As part of this initiative, Elbit Systems Germany is establishing a dedicated organisation focused on research and development of military laser communication systems, with a particular emphasis on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), as well as terrestrial applications. The licensed technology represents a unique, highly lightweight and powerful solution that enables secure, high-capacity data links—a capability that is crucial for next-generation defence systems.

Marian Rachow, CEO of Elbit Systems Germany, commented:
“The development of advanced technologies and intellectual property in Germany for use across Europe and within NATO is a central element of our strategy. This exclusive collaboration with Cucuyo underscores Elbit’s long-term commitment to investing in German innovation, strengthening local research and development, and expanding our technological presence within the European defence ecosystem.”

Frank Negretti, CEO of Cucuyo, also emphasised the technological significance of the collaboration:
“With the newly developed products, together with Elbit Systems Germany we are bringing laser communication into a compact, UAV-compatible format—with high data capacity and long range. The investments made lay the foundation for making this capability operationally available as early as next year.”

Elbit Systems Germany contributes extensive expertise in the fields of electro-optics, radio communication and system integration. The company is well positioned to advance innovation in laser communication that enables next-generation multi-domain operations with future operational platforms.
