MLS | Multi Level System for Controlled CNC Automation of Complex Aerospace & Defence Components

The Fastems Multi Level System (MLS) automates palletized CNC machining for complex aerospace and defence components. It enables controlled handling of large and heavy workpieces, integrates machining with inspection and auxiliary processes, and maintains standardized, repeatable workflows under MMS control.

Automation for large and complex components

Aerospace and defence parts often require multiple machining stages, large pallet sizes, and careful handling due to their value and geometry.

MLS provides a pallet-based automation system designed for milling and turn-mill machines, supporting pallet sizes from 400 to 1,600 mm and workpiece weights up to 11,000 kg.

This allows structural components, housings, and other high-value parts to be moved through machining and related processes in a controlled and documented manner.


Standardized and repeatable pallet workflows

Each part family is assigned a defined pallet, fixture, tool set, and NC program under MMS control.

MLS transports and stores these pallets without manual intervention, ensuring that validated setups are reproduced consistently across shifts and machines.

This supports repeatability and first-part conformity for qualified processes.


Integration of machining and auxiliary operations

MLS can connect CNC machining with:

  • coordinate measuring
  • washing and cleaning
  • deburring and finishing steps

All operations are linked through a defined routing, allowing components to move between process stages without loss of identification or process status.

This reduces manual handling and maintains traceability throughout the manufacturing sequence.


Scalable capacity without process disruption

The modular storage and loading stations allow capacity to be increased step by step.

Additional machines or pallet positions can be added while maintaining the established process structure and documentation logic.

This enables production ramp-up without redefining the entire workflow.


Controlled handling of heavy workpieces

MLS is designed for safe and repeatable handling of large pallets and heavy components.

Automated transport reduces manual lifting and minimizes the risk of handling damage, which is critical for high-value aerospace and defence parts.


MMS-controlled job release and routing

All pallet movements and machine operations are managed by MMS.

Jobs are released only when the correct pallet, fixture, tool set, NC program, and machine are available and approved.

This ensures that each operation is executed under defined conditions and that all process steps are recorded.


Basis for unattended machining of qualified part families

With standardized pallets and validated routings, MLS enables unattended operation for selected part families while maintaining process control and traceability.
