Ukrainian defence group Fire Point is negotiating with European companies to develop a new air‑defence system intended as a low‑cost alternative to the US Patriot system, which has become increasingly scarce due to the war in the Gulf.

As reported on Telepolis, the aim is to reduce the cost of shooting down a ballistic missile to under one million dollars. The system is expected to be brought to market by next year, with the first intercept of an enemy missile planned for late 2027. By contrast, the Patriot system often requires two or three interceptor missiles at several million dollars each. Achieving a cost below one million dollars would be a milestone, Fire Point co‑founder and chief developer Denys Schtiljerman said.

Investor from the United Arab Emirates

Fire Point is also awaiting approval from the Kyiv government for the entry of a Middle Eastern investor. That investor plans to acquire a 30 per cent stake for $760 million, valuing the company at $2.5 billion, Schtiljerman said. Media reports identify the investor as Edge Group from the United Arab Emirates. The investment is intended to open new business areas, including launching satellites into low Earth orbit from the Emirates. According to Schtiljerman, the Ukrainian competition authority is expected to rule on the proposal around October.

Hundreds of drones each day

Founded after the Russian invasion in 2022, the company is the largest Ukrainian manufacturer of long‑range drones. Fire Point is in the final development phase of two ballistic supersonic missiles. The smaller FP‑7, with a range of about 300 kilometres, is to be deployed in the near future. The larger FP‑9 is close to trialling; it is reported to be able to carry an 800‑kilogram warhead up to 850 kilometres, which would put Moscow within reach of Ukraine’s arsenal. Fire Point currently produces hundreds of drones daily at a cost of about €50,000 each, and three Flamingo cruise missiles at roughly €600,000 apiece.
