Helsing and Saab Germany have signed a contract worth several hundred million euros to equip the Eurofighter with an AI-enabled electronic warfare (EW) system. The agreement marks a key step in Germany’s programme to prepare 15 Eurofighter aircraft for dedicated electronic attack missions.

Under the contract, Helsing will supply its AI-based Cirra software suite for electronic warfare, which Saab will integrate into the Arexis sensor package over the next three years. The combined system is designed to enable Eurofighter aircraft to detect, classify and counter modern air-defence radars — including those operated by near-peer adversaries.Initially, the Eurofighter will be configured as an independent electronic attack platform. In a later phase, operational data from Cirra is intended to support other Luftwaffe aircraft, enhancing situational awareness and the effectiveness of joint operations.

Addressing adaptive air-defence threats

Cirra focuses on one of the central challenges in the air domain: highly dynamic and adaptable ground-based air-defence radars. Using deep-learning algorithms, the software classifies previously unknown emitters and interprets their intent. The system runs directly on the aircraft, enabling real-time threat analysis even in environments where emitters are unfamiliar or deliberately deceptive.By improving threat recognition under operational conditions, Cirra is designed to increase aircraft survivability and contribute to a more precise and continuously updated electronic order of battle.

Flight testing completed

To reduce programme risk, Helsing installed Cirra on a flying testbed in recent months. The company conducted its own test and evaluation flights to validate performance and integration behaviour under operationally relevant conditions.

Contract phase follows earlier programme selection

Saab Germany and Helsing were selected in 2023 by the German Ministry of Defence to equip 15 Luftwaffe Eurofighters for electronic warfare. The newly signed agreement marks the start of adaptation and development, carried out together with Airbus Defence and Space as the Eurofighter industrial lead. The conceptual system definition phase was completed over the past 18 months.Helsing co-CEO Gundbert Scherf said the transition to development highlights the company’s ability to bring new technology from concept to flight test in close cooperation with industry partners.
