With the growing demand for digitalised and flexible support capabilities in expeditionary air operations, the German Air Force is strengthening its operational infrastructure with the Ground Support Container System (GSCS) for the Eurofighter. Developed by the GSS+ consortium, comprising HENSOLDT and steep GmbH, the system marks a milestone in providing mission-critical data handling in-theatre.

The GSCS (Ground Support Container System) is a deployable IT and communication platform designed to support Eurofighter operations by enabling on-site mission, maintenance and repair data handling during exercises and deployments. Previously, such functionality was limited to permanent squadron infrastructure within Germany. With the GSCS, the Air Force now gains near-equivalent digital capabilities in the field.

This second project phase ("2. Los") has been underway since 2022 and is commissioned by the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw). The system was officially handed over at the Fürstenfeldbruck site following a successful functional acceptance test in July 2025. Its deployment is scheduled to begin later this year, pending final accreditation.

At the technical core of the GSCS is a secure, multi-domain IT infrastructure provided by HENSOLDT's IT and Communication System Integration division. The system supports IP-based communications, integrates ground and air radio interfaces, and meets military-grade cybersecurity standards. In addition, departments such as logistics, documentation, and cyber security at HENSOLDT contributed to system functionality.

Complementing the digital backbone, steep GmbH supplied the mobile infrastructure, including the containerised and fully shielded enclosure. The unit is self-sufficient with integrated power supply, mechanical outfitting and climate control to ensure reliable performance across environmental conditions.

The presence of end users and senior command staff at the system handover underlines the GSCS’s importance within broader Bundeswehr digitisation and deployability strategies. Once operational, the GSCS will bridge a longstanding capability gap in field-based aircraft support systems for Germany’s Eurofighter fleet.
