Iberdrola, a global energy leader based in Bilbao, has partnered with DXC Technology to deliver one of the most ambitious IT transformation projects in Spain’s energy sector. Over several years, the companies migrated Iberdrola’s core business systems from a legacy mainframe to the Microsoft Azure cloud, moving 180 terabytes of data and more than 30 million lines of code.

The project enables Iberdrola to leverage automation, advanced analytics, and AI integration while improving operational agility and customer service. “The modernisation of our core systems has been a crucial milestone in Iberdrola’s digitalisation strategy,” said Sergio Merchán, Global CIO of Iberdrola. “It allows us to face new business challenges, maintain our global leadership, and quickly adapt to major changes ahead.”

DXC employed automation technologies to ensure the migration proceeded without business disruption. “Our goal was to make technology a growth engine for Iberdrola, allowing them to be more agile, efficient, and future-ready,” said Alfonso García Muriel, President of DXC Technology Spain and Portugal.

The cloud-based platform enables Iberdrola to replicate the model across multiple regions while complying with local regulations. It also supports the company’s sustainability objectives by reducing energy consumption and optimising resources in line with the global energy transition.

With this modernisation, Iberdrola and DXC have set a new benchmark for digital transformation in the highly regulated energy industry, ensuring resilience, scalability, and innovation readiness for years to come.
