The Norwegian government has placed a new order with Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace for additional components of the NASAMS air defence system, in a deal valued at approximately NOK 1 billion (€86 million). The procurement aims to bolster Norway’s capacity to detect and counter aerial threats.

NASAMS air defence system is vital for Norway’s national security interests

Kongsberg President Eirik Lie emphasized the strategic importance of the system: “The NASAMS air defence system is vital for Norway’s national security interests. This delivery provides the latest generation of NASAMS, designed to meet both current and emerging threats.”

Originally developed in the 1990s by Kongsberg in cooperation with Raytheon (U.S.), the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS) is now in service with 13 nations worldwide. According to Gro Jære, Director of the Defence Materiel Agency (NDMA), the acquisition ensures that Norwegian NASAMS units receive flexible, modern command posts and advanced communications systems. “These upgrades provide faster decision-making, higher operational tempo, and improved survivability,” she said.

The contract includes new command posts, mobile communication nodes, and upgraded radios. Existing MRR radios will be replaced by Kongsberg's THOR Combat Net Radio, offering greater capacity and functionality. Enhanced mobility and improved dispersal options for command posts will further increase system survivability.

Additionally, NDMA has ordered long-lead components to enable rapid delivery of further NASAMS units, aligning with Norway’s Long-Term Defence Plan.

The government is prioritising the strengthening of our air defence. This agreement is an important step towards improving response capacity and protecting Norwegian forces and critical infrastructure.

Tore O. Sandvik, Minister of Defence

Background: What are NASAMS units?

NASAMS units are air defence batteries that form part of the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS) — a highly mobile, networked air defence system designed to detect, track, and engage aerial threats such as aircraft, drones, and cruise missiles.
Operational Features
:
- Medium-range coverage (typically 25–40 km).

- Highly mobile — components are truck-mounted for quick relocation.

- Networked — multiple units can operate together, forming an integrated defence layer.
- Flexible — can integrate various missile types, including AMRAAM-ER (extended range) or AIM-9X.
