Rheinmetall and Anduril Industries will work together strategically to launch various software-defined autonomous systems. The aim is to increase the availability of autonomous mission systems. The following points were defined as part of the partnership:

  • There are to be European variants of Anduril's Barracuda and Fury (for multiple missions). These are production-ready autonomous air vehicles. These variants will be integrated into Rheinmetall's Battlesuite;

  • The possibilities on the European market for solid rocket motors with regard to new production approaches for Anduril are being examined;

  • These systems are to be developed and manufactured jointly.

As already indicated, the partnership is then tailored to the needs of individual European markets. The partnership reflects the "built with, not for" philosophy. It is intended to strengthen European sovereignty in defense, allow local control and create transparency and adaptability.

The cooperation is intended to offer these advantages for the defense:

  • The integration of Barracuda and Barracuda-M into the systems will provide the European armed forces with a low-cost autonomous aircraft for hyperscale production. The modular design of Barracuda supports many payloads and specifications for the requirements of European armed forces;

  • By integrating Fury, each country can configure its own command and control systems and operational constraints. Fury is intended for a variety of sensors and payloads to support mission requirements to enable flexible deployment for manned and unmanned aircraft teams;

  • The development of solid rocket motors could help to give Europe access to a reliable range of propulsion systems. These create industrial redundancy and the possibility of large-scale supply if domestic sources are not sufficient.

Better fast, modular and together than slow and every man for himself

The partnership also builds on a previous collaboration between the two companies. The aim is to develop new integrated systems for the defence of very small unmanned aerial vehicles (i.e. drones) and the successful joint participation in the US Army's XM30 Mechanized Infantry Combat Vehicle programme. Instead of slow developments that would tie customers to individual suppliers, this partnership focuses on speed, modularity and joint development. This agile model allows allies to shape and develop their own capabilities within a common NATO-compliant framework.
