Following the announcement in September 2025 and the signing of the purchase agreement in October 2025, the group has now received all antitrust approvals for the acquisition of Naval Vessels Lürssen (NVL B.V. & Co. KG, Bremen-Vegesack) and all of its subsidiaries. The transfer took effect on 1 March 2026. Both parties had agreed not to disclose the purchase price.

With this significant strategic acquisition, Rheinmetall is creating a German system house for the development and production of highly modern naval ships and coast guard boats as well as autonomous maritime surface systems. Rheinmetall is thus further expanding its portfolio in the maritime domain and consolidating its position as a comprehensive provider of defence technology in Germany and Europe.

Armin Papperger, Chief Executive Officer of Rheinmetall AG: “We are pleased about the successful completion of the transaction.” When the plans were first announced, he explained: “In the future, Rheinmetall will be a relevant player on land, at sea, in the air and in space, thus developing into a cross-domain system house. By combining the competencies of Rheinmetall and NVL, we are creating a powerful full-service provider for highly modern surface vessels. In this way we generate joint growth and enable a strong positioning of our group in the maritime domain. At the same time, we are making a substantial contribution to strengthening the maritime defence capabilities of Germany and NATO partner states.”

The current conflict situation shows that military assertiveness is becoming increasingly important in the maritime domain as well. Rheinmetall intends to address the massively rising demand from naval forces and the growing procurement budgets with powerful system solutions featuring a highly modern digital infrastructure and covering the entire spectrum—from the platform and electronics to sensors and effectors.
