With the order of over 300 drives for the Leopard 2 battle tank, one of the largest contracts in recent decades for Rolls-Royce Power Systems from Friedrichshafen has emerged, as emphasized by the company. The Leopard 2 tanks, powered by MTU brand engines, will operate under various flags, including Germany, Sweden, and Lithuania. The Netherlands and the Czech Republic will also be supplied, according to the large-engine manufacturer. Delivery is expected to begin as early as next year. The stock of the British parent company Rolls-Royce Holdings subsequently rose by 1.7 percent and has almost doubled in value this year.

British technology powers the best tank in the world

The Leopard 2 is considered one of the best combat vehicles worldwide, and the MTU engine fits all Leopard models. This order also reflects the challenging security policy situation, said Rolls-Royce Power Systems CEO Jörg Stratmann, noting that demand for military equipment has significantly increased. For this reason, capacities have recently been significantly expanded and are set to be further increased. Just a few weeks ago, the German-French defence company KNDS introduced the latest version of the tank—the Leopard 2A8 by KNDS! Among other features, it is equipped with a protection system from the Israeli manufacturer Rafael, capable of destroying incoming projectiles and drones before impact. A new Leopard tank, by the way, costs a double-digit million amount in the higher range. Added to this are maintenance and servicing costs. According to KNDS, of the models delivered over the past decades, 3,300 vehicles are still in operation with the armed forces of 23 countries.

Rolls-Royce is pleased about the current defence boom

The military division of Rolls-Royce Power Systems—also known within the company as the government business—supplies, among others, the German armed forces, other NATO partners, and allied states. This segment now accounts for around a quarter of the total division's revenue. The company from Lake Constance, operating under the umbrella of the British parent company, surpassed the 5-billion-euro revenue mark in 2024. Under the MTU brand, Rolls-Royce Power Systems also provides tank engines for the Puma infantry fighting vehicle and other models. Due to the current arms boom, there is a high demand for manpower, which is why the company had to borrow staff from the struggling automotive supplier ZF in Friedrichshafen (Germany).
