Denmark and Europe face growing security risks to critical underwater infrastructure due to the rapid expansion of offshore energy facilities and the demands of the green transition. In response, the U-SHIELD research and innovation project has been launched to develop a specialized drone capable of detecting and immobilizing unauthorized underwater vehicles. The technology is designed to safeguard vital subsea assets, including pipelines, communication cables, and offshore wind farms, ensuring the stability and safety of energy and communication systems that society depends on.

“By combining advanced technology and collaboration between leading experts, we can create a solution that not only protects our resources but also promotes the safety and stability of our society,” said Tim Lysholt Jensen, VP Products & Technology at Teledyne RESON A/S, who is leading the project.

The Innovation Fund is investing 26 million kroner (approx. EUR 3,5 Mio.) in U-SHIELD through its Grand Solutions program. Cecilie Brøkner, Director of the Innovation Fund, emphasized the importance of proactive protection: "The green transition makes us more dependent on complex energy systems beneath the sea's surface, and therefore we must also be proactive in protecting them. The U-SHIELD project contributes to developing technology that can make our society more resilient to threats against the systems we all deeply depend on – from energy supply to communication. It holds exciting potential for both Denmark and Europe, and we look forward to following the project."

The initiative brings together leading experts from Teledyne RESON, Aalborg University, the Technical University of Denmark, the University of Southern Denmark, and Copenhagen Subsea, fostering collaboration at the forefront of underwater security innovation. kib
