Virtium Embedded Artists, a developer and manufacturer of AI solutions for industrial and edge applications, features the iMX8M Mini DX‑M1, a System‑on‑Module (SOM) that pairs the NXP i.MX 8M Mini application processor with an energy‑efficient DEEPX neural processing unit (NPU), delivering up to 25 TOPS of AI throughput.

By integrating the DEEPX DX‑M1 accelerator directly on the SOM, manufacturers of embedded devices requiring AI capabilities no longer need to include a separate, discrete AI processor on their system. That brings multiple advantages for OEMs and developers: it saves board space, simplifies system development and the bill of materials (BOM), and enables faster time to market.

Processor, memory and video features

The SOM is built around NXP’s i.MX 8M Mini, an application processor with four Arm Cortex‑A53 CPU cores (1.6 GHz or 1.8 GHz) and a Cortex‑M4 controller core (400 MHz). The i.MX 8M Mini supports video workloads with a 1080p codec, 2D/3D graphics and a four‑lane MIPI‑DSI interface, plus Gigabit Ethernet. The SOM is equipped with 2 GB LPDDR4 system memory for the application processor.

When combined with the DEEPX DX‑M1 NPU, the i.MX 8M Mini supplies the image‑processing capabilities required for AI‑powered machine‑vision systems in a range of current and emerging applications, including:

  • drones
  • security and surveillance
  • automated inspection and monitoring
  • traffic systems
  • medical devices
  • agricultural technology

As defence budgets rise and EU programmes expand, civil technology providers are becoming vital contributors to Europe’s strategic autonomy. The event will act as a neutral platform for dialogue between technology suppliers, integrators, and decision-makers shaping the next generation of European defence capabilities and aims to open doors between civil industry and defence procurement, providing practical insights.

High AI performance at low power

The DX‑M1 is a high‑performance AI accelerator offering 25 TOPS at an average power draw of around 5 W, making the SOM well suited to low‑power edge computing scenarios. In Virtium Embedded Artists’ implementation, the SOM includes 4 GB LPDDR5 memory dedicated to the AI processor, connected via a 4‑channel 64‑bit memory bus. This allows the DX‑M1 to run multiple AI models concurrently without performance loss.

Market response and product variants

Anders Rosvall, Managing Director of Virtium Embedded Artists, commented: “The launch of the iMX8M Mini DX‑M1 responds to rapidly growing demand from edge and IoT device makers for a turnkey hardware platform for AI vision and low‑power embedded control. OEMs can now bring new products to market faster and more easily, delivering the added value AI brings to machine vision across industry, mobility, security and edge computing.”

The iMX8M Mini DX‑M1 SOM is available in two variants: one featuring both the DEEPX AI accelerator and the i.MX 8M Mini processor, and a second variant with only the i.MX 8M Mini. This enables OEMs to upgrade existing i.MX 8M Mini‑based carrier boards to add machine‑vision AI without changing the carrier design.

Both SOM variants can be ordered in a 1.8 GHz i.MX 8M Mini version rated for 0 °C to 70 °C operation, or a 1.6 GHz i.MX 8M Mini version rated for -40 °C to 85 °C operation.

Support, kits and availability

Virtium Embedded Artists provides full technical support for the iMX8M Mini DX‑M1 hardware and supplies a DEEPX iM8 Mini AI Kit with reference implementations for common interfaces. The company also offers ready‑made standard carrier boards to simplify customer integration.

Orders for the iMX8M Mini DX‑M1 SOM are being accepted via Virtium Embedded Artists’ website (www.embeddedartists.com/products/imx8m-mini-dx-m1-som) and through distributors Arrow, Avnet and Future Electronics.
