Sensor specialist Hensoldt has received ESSI orders from Diehl Defence worth over 100 million euros as part of the German European Sky Shield Initiative. The company is supplying additional TRML-4D high-performance radars, including a maintenance and training package, to various European countries. The radars will be used in the ESSI countries as part of the IRIS-T SLM air defence system.

"There is enormous pent-up demand in European air defence, and the threats posed by air attacks are more complex and varied than they were a few years ago. Digital technologies – keyword ‘software-defined defence’ – are increasingly enabling existing capabilities to be linked, software-based modernisations to be rolled out and development cycles to be massively shortened. We are also working on this with our air defence radars, thereby increasing the efficiency and performance of our products," says Markus Rothmaier, Head of Naval & Ground Radars at Hensoldt.

The TRML-4D air defence radar has demonstrated exceptionally good reconnaissance performance in Ukraine, among other places. It is based on the latest AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) radar technology and ensures the rapid detection and tracking of around 1,500 targets within a radius of up to 250 kilometres. It is capable of quickly and reliably detecting, tracking and classifying all types of air targets – cruise missiles, rockets, drones and aircraft – for combat.

As defence budgets rise and EU programmes expand, civil technology providers are becoming vital contributors to Europe’s strategic autonomy. The event will act as a neutral platform for dialogue between technology suppliers, integrators, and decision-makers shaping the next generation of European defence capabilities and aims to open doors between civil industry and defence procurement, providing practical insights.

Hensoldt has decades of experience with radar systems for air defence and is actively driving the further development of key technologies in this field. In addition to the high-performance TRML-4D radar, the company's portfolio includes the Spexer short-range radar, the Twinvis passive radar and radars for securing shipping and air traffic. As part of the ESSI initiative, Hensoldt already has contracts for over 150 radars of various types.
