Slovenia has signed a new agreement to procure two more IRIS‑T SLM medium-range air defence fire units from Diehl Defence under Germany’s European Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI). These follow-on orders further reinforce Slovenia's NATO-aligned air defence capability.

Under the European Sky Shield Initiative—a multinational framework launched by Germany in 2022 to enhance integrated European air defence—Slovenia has advanced its defence modernisation by ordering two additional IRIS‑T SLM fire units from Diehl Defence. The contract was formalised in July 2025 between Diehl and the German procurement agency BAAINBw, acting on behalf of Slovenia.

Slovenia previously procured one IRIS‑T SLM unit in January 2024, making this the first follow-on procurement under ESSI’s standardised contract structure. Each fire unit comprises a radar, a tactical operations centre, four missile launchers loaded with IRIS‑T SL guided missiles, and logistics elements including mobile reload and maintenance vehicles.

This procurement is an important signal of confidence in IRIS‑T SLM’s operational performance. Notably, the system has demonstrated high effectiveness in live operations, reportedly maintaining high hit rates even during complex attacks involving multiple targets.

Under ESSI, participating countries aim to streamline procurement through shared frameworks and develop synergies in training, maintenance and logistics. Slovenia is among 24 participating states in the initiative, which seeks to strengthen NATO interoperability and enable faster capability deployment.

The IRIS‑T SLM system is designed to counter threats such as aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles and drones at ranges of up to 40 km and altitudes of up to 20 km. Its features include 360° coverage, tactical mobility, rapid deployability, and multi-target engagement using minimal personnel.

This procurement reflects both a strategic strengthening of Slovenia’s national air defence and the growing influence of ESSI in shaping regional interoperability. Centralised procurement via Germany enables faster acquisition and standardisation across multiple defence forces.

Meanwhile, ESSI continues to expand—24 European nations now participate, signalling a collective commitment to networked air defence architectures integrated with NATO systems.

For Diehl Defence and its partners, the project enhances industrial cooperation across borders and underscores the commercial model of standardised system delivery under ESSI. For Slovenia, this marks a shift toward a more autonomous and modern defence posture.
