Germany and Norway had concluded a joint contract in 2021 for the procurement of an initial total of six submarines of the new class. Norway is now extending its order with Germany's largest naval shipbuilder TKMS (as expected) by two more submarines. The Norwegian government has approved the purchase of further submarines, as reported by TKMS. Norway had already ordered four boats as part of the German-Norwegian 212CD program. The commitment for boats number five and six has now followed. With this strategically important and now growing project, TKMS is making a decisive contribution to strengthening Europe's defense capability and the relationship between the two countries. The company is also talking about one of the largest orders in its history.

TKMS enjoys Submarine Boom on a Global Scale

At the end of 2024, the Bundestag's Budget Committee also approved the construction of four more submarines for the German Navy. This means that TKMS is now building six boats of the new type for Norway and Germany. The Kiel-based submarine builder is now also hoping for another 212CD order from Canada, which would ideally involve twelve submarines. However, the shipyard also has a competitor from South Korea to beat in this deal. A decision on who will now be allowed to build is expected this year, according to reports. TKMS has already increased important key figures in the past financial year 2024/25. The order backlog at that time was already at 18.2 billion euros. This was around 55 percent more than a year earlier (EUR 11.6 billion). According to the company, it currently has over 9,100 employees, around 3,300 of whom work in Kiel. Other locations are Wismar and Itajaí in Brazil. Incidentally, thyssenkrupp is the majority shareholder.
