The German defense company Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) is one of two companies on the shortlist for the planned purchase of several submarines, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced after a meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Berlin. Accordingly, Carney announced a visit to TKMS in Kiel. In October, he plans to visit the rival supplier from South Korea, according to reports.

According to its own information, TKMS is the world market leader for non-nuclear submarines. Germany and Norway have already jointly ordered ten 212CD class submarines from the company. The Canadians may want to join this German-Norwegian initiative. Merz commented that such a standardization of systems would be a very strong signal for joint security of the North Atlantic. It now remains to be seen whether this will actually happen.
