A newly established joint German-Ukrainian defence company aims to deliver at least 10,000 drones by the end of the year for the Ukrainian armed forces fighting against the Russian invasion. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky received a freshly manufactured drone from the facility located in southern Germany before the start of the Munich Security Conference.

"We are supporting Ukraine in its fight," said Defence Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) during the brief ceremony. "But we also benefit ourselves." Further joint defence projects involving NATO countries and Ukraine are expected to follow.

Higher production figures

The new company is called Quantum Frontline Industries. The Bavarian manufacturer Quantum Systems has been supplying reconnaissance drones to Ukraine since 2022, with around 1,500 unmanned aerial vehicles currently in use according to company information. The joint venture will now manufacture the drones named "Linza," produced by the Ukrainian company Frontline Robotics, under license. As Ukraine's defence industry suffers from Russian attacks, relocating production to Germany is expected to facilitate higher output.

While the "Linza" is not a weapon, it can be utilised as such. The transport drone can carry loads of up to two kilograms, including bombs and grenades. Production is set to expand next year. "There are really no limits to growth, except for the company's capacities," said Pistorius. The initiative has been implemented at "lightning speed." Zelensky thanked the German government for its support. "Our people will share knowledge, technology, and training," said the Ukrainian President.

More joint ventures set to launch

Drone production will also play a significant role in additional joint ventures. The software manufacturer Auterion, with dual headquarters in the USA and Munich, plans to produce thousands of UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) in collaboration with the Ukrainian company Airlogix.
