Drones are not all the same Loitering Munitions, Reconnaissance Systems and the New Logic of the Sensor-to-Effector Chain

Between FPV drones, tactical UAS, MALE platforms and loitering munitions, a new military-technological capability field is emerging—with significant consequences for industry, procurement and battlefield operations.

The term "drone" has become too imprecise for the current stage of military-technological development. What is often grouped under a single label in public debate actually covers a highly diverse spectrum of systems: nano and micro drones for close-range reconnaissance, FPV drones for tactical direct attack, multirotors for observation and light payload delivery, fixed-wing UAS for range and endurance, MALE and HALE platforms for operational and strategic surveillance, and loitering munitions as a separate category between unmanned aircraft, missile and precision munition.
