Aircraft engine MRO provider EME Aero, a 50/50 joint venture between Lufthansa Technik and MTU Aero Engines, has commissioned a second test cell at its facility in Jasionka, near Rzeszów, Poland. With this expansion, the site will be able to overhaul more than 500 Pratt & Whitney geared turbofan (GTF) engines annually by 2028.

The partners have invested more than $37 million in the expansion, marking a significant step in scaling operations. “EME Aero is an efficient, reliable, and capable pillar of the GTF MRO network. We are now taking the next step to grow our capacities, as the fleet continues to expand,” said Michael Schreyögg, Chief Program Officer at MTU Aero Engines. Over 12,000 GTF engine orders and commitments have been placed globally by more than 90 customers – nearly 1,100 of them in 2025 alone, following strong demand at the Paris Air Show.

Strategic Milestone for Global MRO

Built in just 600 days, the second test cell complements the site's existing infrastructure, which began overhauling PW1100G-JM engines (for the Airbus A320neo) in December 2019. Since then, EME Aero has added the PW1500G (for Airbus A220) in 2022 and the PW1900G (for Embraer E-Jets E2) in 2023 to its service portfolio – demonstrating its growing role in the global GTF MRO network.

Harald Gloy, COO of Lufthansa Technik, commented: “EME is already one of the world’s top-performing GTF maintenance specialists and will soon reach the milestone of 1,000 overhauled engines – just over five years since operations began.”

The site currently employs around 1,200 staff. Robert Maślach (CEO) and Anneke Troeller (COO) emphasized that this expansion further strengthens EME Aero’s status as one of the world’s largest and most advanced teardown, assembly, and test centers.

Europe Responds to Global MRO Demand Surge

The expansion is EME Aero’s response to the rising demand for next-generation engine MRO, driven by supply chain pressures, increased aircraft deliveries, and global growth in the single-aisle segment. It reflects a broader trend toward regionalization and scaling of MRO infrastructure. For MTU and Lufthansa Technik, this marks not only a technical but also a strategic move, particularly as European airlines increasingly rely on GTF-powered aircraft.
