The attacks on airports—some of which have already been targeted—should be viewed as the beginning of hybrid warfare, the effective countering of which is still being hampered by jurisdictional issues at the federal and state levels. However, according to insiders, Deutsche Telekom and Hensoldt are now set to assist in the planning and installation of a new, nationwide network for detecting and defending against drones. More specifically, this involves an artificial intelligence (AI)-based platform that can link data from cell phone towers with defence systems at airports, power plants, and Bundeswehr locations. Sensors will provide data for this purpose, which will then be automatically analysed, according to the report. This is intended to create a Germany-wide air situation picture of drone activities, which will serve as the basis for bringing them down from the sky if necessary. Applications from other manufacturers are to be integrated into the platform.
