KNDS is now focusing on additional German locations and closer German-French cooperation as it expands its production, according to recent reports.

In an interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Florian Hohenwarter, head of KNDS Germany, cited the new Capint main battle tank as an example. Hohenwarter: “This interim solution for main battle tanks brings together technology from both countries! The lower hull is based on the Leopard 2 from KNDS Germany, and the turret comes from KNDS France at the request of the French military.” Two new locations in Germany are also set to ensure the ramp-up of production at KNDS.

One location will be dedicated to the entire production chain, ranging from the hull to the finished armored vehicle—in this case, with a focus on wheeled vehicles—meaning, apparently, the so-called Boxer. The second facility will primarily be responsible for welding tasks. Hohenwarter cannot yet say exactly where the two new KNDS sites in Germany will be located. He only noted that the company is looking around and discussing the matter with various businesses. One thing, however, is fairly certain: The KNDS workforce in Germany will essentially double by the end of the decade. This would mean an increase of about 4,500 new employees, if not more.
