Few industries operate under as much time pressure as the military and security sector. Europe’s defence companies are working at full capacity and are struggling to keep up with the surge in new orders. One of the key reasons is a growing shortage of skilled labour, which in turn demands fundamentally new structures across the entire production process. The British company AADS is addressing these challenges by using additive manufacturing and combining it with an innovative procurement strategy.

AADS specialises in the conversion of series-production vehicles. Among other projects, the company modifies the Jeep Wrangler J8 into troop carriers, ambulances, patrol vehicles or command vehicles for military and police forces. These vehicles are custom-built and developed to meet highly specific requirements. The conversion process involves numerous add-on and conversion components produced in small to medium batch sizes, for which traditional manufacturing methods such as injection moulding are usually uneconomical. At the same time, engineers are under constant pressure to develop new products rapidly.
