Darmstadt-based start-up HCP Sense has developed a technology designed to detect wear in bearings at an early stage, helping to prevent failures before they occur.

Entering the defence market can be challenging for start-ups, says HCP Sense CEO Ansgar Thilmann.(Picture: HCP Sense)

Rolling-element and plain bearings are among the less visible yet essential components found in countless technical systems. In defence equipment, their reliability is of critical importance. HCP Sense  takes a different approach for measurement. Its technology uses the electrical properties of a rolling-element bearing itself (see box), eliminating the need for external sensors. All that is required is an electrical contact point on both the rotating and the stationary part of the system.
