Rheinmetall has reached a key milestone as part of its new strategic partnership with Italian space company Argotec: on 1 October 2026, the first satellite developed under the collaboration was successfully launched into orbit aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 launch vehicle from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, USA.

With this successful launch, the Düsseldorf (Germany)-based technology group, through its subsidiary Rheinmetall Italia S.p.A. and in close coordination with institutional stakeholders, is initiating the targeted development of an independent, satellite-based capability for national security and military situational awareness. The successful launch marks an important milestone in Rheinmetall’s growing activities in the space sector.

Focus on airspace surveillance and system integration

The focus of the satellite programme launched on 1 October 2026 is on gathering intelligence rather than conventional mapping of ground-based objects. Instead, the orbiting satellite’s sensors identify ground-based indicators of emerging airborne threats, provide important early-warning intelligence and deliver data that is critical to air defence.

The situational awareness and image data collected are processed using artificial intelligence (AI) to enable seamless integration into national defence and air defence systems and to make the information directly available to customers. The system combines several operational layers, including space-based observation, ground-based nodes and tactical networks managed through a state-of-the-art command and control centre. This architecture is designed to meet the requirements of the next generation of defence and security capabilities and enable missions aimed at achieving intelligence superiority.

With Argotec, Rheinmetall has found an industrial partner with extensive experience gained through NASA and other leading international space programmes. Both partners are using the success of the current mission to validate their respective technical capabilities under real-world operating conditions and subsequently advance them through phased joint development.

Core element of a future satellite constellation

“The successful launch of our first satellite is a milestone in strengthening national security and space capabilities,” says Armin Papperger, CEO of Rheinmetall AG. “Integrating space-based data into existing defence architectures is a crucial step towards meeting the challenges of the changing security environment. This collaboration confirms the confidence placed in our technological integration expertise and makes a significant contribution to technological sovereignty and resilient, networked situational awareness.”

“The successful launch of this satellite is an important milestone in building next-generation space infrastructure tailored to operational and defence policy requirements,” says David Avino, CEO and founder of Argotec. “Together with Rheinmetall, we are turning space technology into a valuable operational resource—scalable, connected and ready to support complex defence scenarios. This is an important step towards greater technological autonomy, as we transform data into near-real-time information that supports decision-makers.”

The medium- to long-term programme is based on a modular approach. The successful launch establishes the technological foundation for validating operational functionality in orbit and securing the subsequent funding phases.

Building on this initial capability, the space-based component is intended to be gradually expanded into a more comprehensive satellite constellation. A further satellite launch is already firmly scheduled in the programme roadmap for 2028.
