Kloeckner Metals Germany GmbH, one of Germany's leading producer independent steel suppliers and metal processors, has officially opened a new site for its subsidiary Ambo Stahl in Hürth (Germany) near Cologne. With the additional capacity, the company is responding to growing customer demand for high performance, reliable and as seamless as possible manufacturing solutions, particularly in security critical sectors such as defence and critical infrastructure. The new site, with its focus on the defence industry, complements Ambo Stahl's existing facility in Cologne Ehrenfeld, which has extensive expertise in processing wear resistant, high strength and ballistic speciality steels and holds the relevant approvals from the German Armed Forces.

The expansion also strengthens industrial supply chains and creates additional production capacity for manufacturing safety relevant components in Germany. As a result, Kloeckner Metals Germany is developing Ambo Stahl into one of Germany's most advanced competence centres for steel and metal processing in the defence sector.

The technological centrepiece of the new site is the Cutlite Penta PLUS BEVEL 6530 with 60 kW, one of the world's most powerful fibre laser cutting systems. Kloeckner Metals Germany is therefore among the first companies in Germany to deploy a system in this performance class. The Cutlite Penta PLUS BEVEL 6530 with 60 kW is specifically designed for companies seeking to produce not only straight cuts but also precise, high quality welding bevels directly with the laser. The system features a bevel head capable of producing both conventional straight cuts and highly precise welding bevels, including V, X, Y and K bevels with positive and negative angles of up to 45 degrees, directly during the cutting process.

This eliminates downstream milling or chamfering operations in many cases, meaning that components are immediately ready for welding. For customers, this results in shorter lead times, fewer interfaces and more efficient downstream processing, particularly for automated welding processes. The 60 kW performance class also enables exceptionally high cutting speeds and significantly higher productivity even with very thick materials, while reducing heat input and delivering advantages over plasma cutting together with high quality cut edges.

Felix Schmitz, CEO of Kloeckner Metals Germany says:

"With the new site in Hürth, we are sending a clear message: we are taking action and investing specifically where our customers in the defence sector require additional capacity at the highest technological level. At the same time, this investment strengthens our position as an innovative technology partner for industry in the defence and critical infrastructure sectors. In doing so, we are making a tangible contribution to expanding resilient industrial supply chains and strengthening Europe's defence capabilities."

The laser cutting system is complemented by milling, press braking, sandblasting, deburring and edge rounding capabilities for component finishing. Quality assurance is carried out directly on site. This enables customers to cover a larger share of their value chain through a single partner, from cutting and mechanical processing to installation ready components.

In addition to its focus on defence, the new site also serves the construction machinery sector as well as all of Kloeckner Metals Germany's core industries, including automotive, materials handling, consumer goods, agricultural machinery, logistics, mechanical engineering, heavy machinery and transport.

With the opening of the Hürth site, Kloeckner Metals Germany is also continuing to expand its nationwide network of competence centres for advanced steel and metal processing. Customers benefit from a Germany wide technology and production network that combines specialised services, additional manufacturing capacity and cross site supply. Together with the competence centres in Bremen, Velten, Landsberg, Cologne and Duisburg, this creates an integrated nationwide technology and production network for high precision steel and metal processing.

Applications for the defence and critical infrastructure sectors are of particular importance. As Kloeckner Metals Germany's specialised competence centre, Ambo Stahl GmbH supports customers with wear resistant and high strength speciality steels as well as security and armour steels.

The company holds official approval in accordance with TL 2350-0000 for processing armour materials and, through its qualified manufacturing processes, also fulfils the requirements of TL 2350-0003, providing proof of compliance with the German Armed Forces' technical delivery conditions. These approvals from the Defence Technical Service for Weapons and Ammunition (WTD91) cover laser, plasma and waterjet cutting of ballistic steels and confirm Ambo Stahl's technical expertise in processing protective materials in accordance with the strictest military engineering standards.

With the new site, Ambo Stahl is expanding this certified portfolio with additional advanced processing capabilities. Its services range from oxyfuel, plasma, laser and waterjet cutting to sandblasting, covering the entire process chain from precision cutting to installation ready formed components. Customers benefit from bundled services, shorter coordination processes and greater security of supply.

As part of the international Klöckner & Co Group, Kloeckner Metals Germany also has access to a global metal processing and service network.
