TKMS enjoys upper water with expertise for underwater

While we're on the subject of submarines, we might as well march over to Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS). The Kiel-based subsidiary of the Essen-based industrial group Thyssenkrupp claims to be the world market leader for non-nuclear submarines. Moreover, the company is working at full capacity until the early 2040s. In December, the Bundestag's budget committee approved the construction of four more 212CD class submarines for the German Navy. A total of ten such boats have now been ordered. Six of these will sail for Germany and four for Norway. Recently, TKMS also received a whopping 800 million euro order from the German government to modernize six ageing type 212A submarines for the German Navy. According to TKMS, the order book amounts to around 18 billion euros. The shipyard is currently also bidding to build submarines for Canada. The armaments company employs a total of 8,500 people and also has a shipyard in Wismar.

DND bazooka grabs the armored bull by the steel horns

Dynamit Nobel Defence GmbH (DND) is an arms company that is largely under the radar with regard to the public. However, it is known that DND provided Ukraine with a total of 16,917 Matador bazookas by April 2025 and was paid for by the German government. For the company with over 300 employees, the war in Ukraine is therefore a huge boost to growth. In a mandatory notification from March 2023 - which also exists - the company wrote that turnover in 2022, the year the war began, amounted to around 140 million euros, more than double the 2021 figure of 58 million euros. Incidentally, DND is part of the Israeli arms group Rafael.

Heckler & Koch marches from impending bankruptcy to success

Less than ten years ago, Heckler & Koch, known for its automatic handguns, was deep in the red and sitting on an enormous mountain of debt. The situation was so precarious that the workforce agreed to work unpaid overtime. But that is now a thing of the past, so to speak. In the meantime, the profitable weapons manufacturer is rushing from one record high to the next. The main plant in Oberndorf in the northern Black Forest is therefore also investing heavily - for example in a new shooting center. In the coming years, investments are to be increased even further. However, it is not only the German armed forces that are being supplied with new weapons. Some Baltic states and Norway, neighboring countries of Russia for good reason, are also happy to receive Hecker & Koch weapons. Since the beginning of 2022, the number of employees has risen by a good fifth to around 1,300 people.
