Molex, a global electronics leader and connectivity innovator, has unveiled the AirBorn 3U VPX Power Supply, a smaller, more versatile power solution designed for harsh aerospace and defense environments. The new unit extends the innovation of AirBorn’s award-winning 6U VPX Power Supply into a compact VITA 62 form factor, combining high power density with advanced EMI filtering for mission-critical systems.“AirBorn’s VPX power systems set new benchmarks for density and efficiency, reflecting decades of experience in rugged aerospace and defense applications,” said Mike Cole, SVP and president, Aerospace and Defense Solutions, Molex. “With the new 3U model, we’ve engineered a solution that balances compact size with uncompromising reliability.”

Reducing Complexity, Meeting Military Standards

Approximately one-third the size and weight of the 6U version, the new 3U VPX Power Supply is SOSA-compliant, optimized for size, weight, power and cost (SWaP-C), and designed to deliver up to 1,000 watts. It meets MIL-STD-1275 requirements for 28V vehicle power environments and complies with MIL-STD-461 CE101/CE102 for conducted emissions—reducing design, testing and qualification time for engineers.

Integrated EMI suppression eliminates the need for external filtering, safeguarding sensitive electronics against interference, crosstalk and signal degradation. “For compact 3U systems, an all-in-one solution that handles power conversion and EMI filtering on a single board is extremely compelling,” said Scott Poole, director of Design and Development Engineering at AirBorn.

Powering Critical Systems in Compact Spaces

The ruggedized 3U VPX model is purpose-built for environments where space is at a premium, including military ground vehicles, Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), robotics, and AI-driven distributed systems. Its design ensures reliable operation under voltage spikes, surges, and other demanding conditions common in defense applications.

Complementary Technology from BittWare

BittWare, another Molex company, announced an early access program for its new 3U VPX card portfolio featuring AMD’s next-generation embedded processors, RF, and FPGA technologies. Designed to complement AirBorn power systems, these rugged, SOSA-aligned cards target mission-critical applications such as radar, electronic warfare, and satellite communications.
