Recently, Boris Pistorius signed a 10-point plan at the Berlin Bendlerblock together with the delegation of the Indian Defence Minister, which is intended to deepen cooperation and promotion within the arms industry, as it is said. The SPD politician stated this during his visit to the Kiel-based submarine manufacturer TKMS. Together with his Indian counterpart Rajnath Singh, he inspected a submarine of the 212A class there, essentially the predecessor model of the state-of-the-art 212-CD. With the signing of the plan, the defence industry cooperation, according to Pistorius, reaches the next level. It is now a collaboration on equal footing. This way, Germany and India could mutually benefit both industrially and in terms of their armed forces.

Billion-dollar submarine construction in Mumbai is also planned

India also plans to build six submarines worth eight billion euros in Mumbai together with the German company TKMS, as further information reveals. Currently, domestic coordination processes are underway, as the Federal Defence Minister stated during his visit to TKMS. He is therefore very confident that an agreement can be signed soon. Pistorius expects a result within the next three months. Why India? Well, the giant country is considered the world's largest arms importer according to the latest statistics from the peace research institute Sipri. However, between 2019 and 2023, the country still sourced 36 percent of its arms from Russia, although this is a declining trend according to analyses. And German arms exports to India could obviously also reduce India's dependence on Russian arms manufacturers.
