The session brought together European Commissioner for Defence and Space Andrius Kubilius and Japan’s State Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Toshio Ino, with a video message from State Minister of Defence Masahisa Miyazaki. Participants included defence companies and trade associations from both sides, officials from Japan’s METI and MOD, and EU services such as DG DEFIS, DG GROW, DG TRADE and the EEAS.

Participants agreed that putting the EU‑Japan Competitiveness Alliance into practice is the right framework to strengthen joint competitiveness and to position both partners to help shape international discussions on defence‑industrial and technological matters.

As defence budgets rise and EU programmes expand, civil technology providers are becoming vital contributors to Europe’s strategic autonomy. The event will act as a neutral platform for dialogue between technology suppliers, integrators, and decision-makers shaping the next generation of European defence capabilities and aims to open doors between civil industry and defence procurement, providing practical insights.

They also highlighted a shared priority to reinforce defence‑industrial bases and deepen security partnerships in today’s challenging strategic environment. Particular emphasis was placed on boosting the resilience of defence supply chains, including in dual‑use areas, and on maintaining exchanges to identify practical avenues for cooperation.

Finally, the launch of the Dialogue by the Aerospace, Security and Defence Industries Association of Europe (ASD) and the Society of Japanese Aerospace Companies (SJAC) was welcomed. Participants also welcomed the intention for ASD and SJAC to conclude a Memorandum of Cooperation to promote collaboration between European and Japanese defence industries, including on advanced and dual‑use technologies.
