Managing AI use Why Hardware Reliability Matters for AI in Aerospace & Defence

Two converging trends are shaping how artificial intelligence (AI) is used in aerospace and defence system design and engineering, both of which centre on governance. The first is the policy gap, reflected in the approval lag and divide between engineers who want to move faster and leadership, who ultimately take responsibility for any new risk. The second is the challenge of managing AI use that is already occurring throughout the organisation.
A 2025 Molex survey of 1,021 design engineers and managers focused on aerospace and defence across the USA, UK, France and Germany found that four in five engineers whose companies have not formally approved any AI tools are using them anyway. In design industries as regulated as these, this can have serious implications.
