In a program first, Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT), in partnership with the U.S. Army, successfully redirected an in‑flight GMLRS rocket during a recent test at White Sands Missile Range.

During the flight test, the team launched GMLRS from a HIMARS launcher and then used the Strigo datalink and the Remote Interceptor Guidance-360 (RIG-360), integrated through internal Lockheed Martin funding, to update the rocket’s target while in flight. The GMLRS then successfully destroyed the moving target.

The big picture

This capability demonstration marks a significant step toward expanding the capabilities for the Army's combat-proven GMLRS without fundamentally changing the missile by connecting existing sensors, launchers and targeting systems. It also gives commanders the opportunity to make adjustments from pre-programmed strikes, offering a flexible firing option if battlefield conditions change.

Why it matters

  • An Interconnected Battlefield: The successful live-fire event supports the Army's vision for networked precision fires by connecting sensors, launchers and targeting systems into a single integrated kill chain and provides soldiers with greater flexibility against dynamic threats.
  • Application for Future Precision Fires Munitions: The datalink package is directly applicable to other precision fires rockets and missiles including Extended Range GMLRS and Precision Strike Missile (PrSM), to extend networked fire across an array of munitions.

Expert perspective

“By delivering this level of integration between Lockheed Martin products such as GMLRS, RIG-360 and Strigo, we’re giving our warfighters the confidence and capability to succeed in the most complex, real‑world scenarios,” said Randy Crites, vice president, Lockheed Martin Advanced Programs. “Accelerating mission integration with trusted systems ensures faster, more effective outcomes on the modern battlefield and gives commanders the flexible options they need to respond to any threat.”
