It has now been announced that ZF will begin providing so-called engineering services to Diehl Defence effective immediately. This involves technical development work ranging from initial concepts to the testing of components and systems. According to ZF, the company is contributing its expertise in the development, testing, and manufacture of complex technical systems, though it does not provide any specific details. The company relies on test benches, simulations, and testing methods that allow components to be tested under conditions as realistic as possible. The goal is to shorten development times and accelerate the development of innovations for defence applications. However, the specific projects involved remain confidential. Therefore, no further details are available.

Geographical proximity becomes a driver of efficiency

Diehl Defence will remain responsible for the systems’ specifications and their integration into the defence sector. However, ZF specialists are expected to work directly on-site in Überlingen alongside Diehl Defence’s development teams. The company did not disclose how many specialists this involves. The proximity between the Friedrichshafen and Überlingen locations (approximately 30 kilometers) facilitates quick communication and, as a result, closer and easier collaboration. As is well known, Diehl Defence and ZF have deep roots in the Lake Constance region. Diehl currently equips the armies of 21 nations with the Iris-T SLM air defence system—including Germany and Ukraine. The automotive supplier ZF is best known for its powertrain and chassis technology.
