The new C919 passenger jet from the state-owned manufacturer Comac has completed its first international scheduled flight. An Air China aircraft flew from Beijing to the Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar, according to the state news agency Xinhua. A daily round trip is planned for this route. Since May 2023, the C919 has been used in regular passenger service. So far, it has mainly operated within China and between mainland China and Hong Kong. The Mongolia connection is now the first regular route to another country. According to the manufacturer, the C919 has so far been used on 57 routes to 25 cities and has transported over 7.5 million passengers. The operators also include China Eastern and China Southern.

Comac wants to sell the C919 internationally

Comac aims to openly compete with Airbus and Boeing in the long term with the C919. The passenger jet is roughly the same size as the Airbus A320 and the Boeing 737. China is also one of the most important aviation markets in the world and is therefore of great significance to both Western manufacturers. However, Comac is now clearly stepping out of its national comfort zone in its business activities. The company plans to sell its aircraft in other countries as well. The only obstacle is that the C919 has not yet been certified by European or American aviation authorities, which naturally makes selling to many other countries more difficult.
