The new passenger jet C919 from the state manufacturer Comac has completed its first international scheduled flight. An Air China aircraft flew from Beijing to the Mongolian capital, Ulaanbaatar, as reported by the state news agency Xinhua. A daily round trip is also planned for this route. Since May 2023, the C919 has been deployed in regular passenger service. Until now, it primarily flew within China and between mainland China and Hong Kong. The connection to Mongolia is now the first regular route to another country. According to the manufacturer, the C919 has so far been used on 57 routes to 25 cities, carrying over 7.5 million passengers. Other operators include China Eastern and China Southern.

Comac wants to sell the C919 internationally

Comac openly aims to compete with Airbus and Boeing in the long term with the C919. The passenger jet is roughly the same size as the Airbus A320 and the Boeing 737. Moreover, China is one of the most important aviation markets in the world, making it highly significant for both Western manufacturers. However, Comac now apparently seeks to expand its business activities beyond the domestic market. The company plans to sell its aircraft in other countries as well. The only obstacle is that the C919 has not yet been certified by European or American aviation authorities, which naturally complicates sales to many other countries.
