Frequentis has been commissioned by the Federal Ministry of Defence with a comprehensive modernisation project for the military air-ground communication system in Austria. The aim of the project is to bring the communication infrastructure of military air traffic control and airspace surveillance up to the latest state of the art and to ensure its future viability for at least another 15 years.

Military air-ground communication ensures secure voice and information exchange between ground and airborne units as well as between ground stations and is a central prerequisite for air traffic control, airspace surveillance and tactical command. The radio systems used as part of the project are supplied by Rohde & Schwarz, an established partner of Frequentis in this field.

Klaudia Tanner, Minister of Defence: “The modernisation of the military air communication system is a key component of airspace defence. Only with the best radio connection can operations be successfully carried out and coordinated. This will ensure operational readiness, the security of Austrian airspace and the safety of the population for the coming years.”

Peter Skiczuk, Senior Vice President Defence at Frequentis: “With this project, we are modernising a central communication infrastructure of military air traffic control. The new system ensures secure and highly available communication for the coming decades. We are pleased to continue our more than 50-year cooperation with the Federal Ministry of Defence.”

In addition to military use, air-ground communication also directly contributes to public safety. For example, Austrian Armed Forces helicopter pilots coordinate their missions during forest fire or firefighting operations via these communication systems. The modernisation is therefore both an investment in military operational capability and in the protection of the population.
