Rohde & Schwarz introduces the MP007, a new man-portable, tactical direction finding system that enables seamless signal detection across the entire frequency band from 9 MHz to 8 GHz. The system covers a wide spectrum ranging from high frequency (HF) to modern mobile communications and radar bands.

The MP007 combines precise signal location with mobility and networking capabilities and was developed for flexible deployment in the field. It combines a robust portable receiver (R&S PR200) inside an impact-resistant transport case with a high-performance DF antenna (R&S ADD507). The complete system can be assembled entirely without tools and has a total weight of around 27 kg. Specific configurations for backpack operation, including a mast and adapter – as well as variants for vehicle mounting with longer RF cables and a magnetic antenna mount, allow for different operational profiles without requiring complex conversions. The optional R&S HE400 handheld antenna is also available for near-field homing.

Swapping batteries during operation

Technically, the system achieves a typical direction finding accuracy of approximately 2° RMS. With a real-time bandwidth of up to 40 MHz and a panorama scan rate of up to 60 GHz/s, the MP007 provides fast signal analysis and precise localisation. The power supply relies on two hot-swappable batteries with integrated charging electronics, which provide up to eight hours of operating time in dual mode. Uninterrupted operation can be maintained by swapping batteries during operation. Thanks to its modular design, the system is highly manageable for tactical teams.

As defence budgets rise and EU programmes expand, civil technology providers are becoming vital contributors to Europe’s strategic autonomy. The event will act as a neutral platform for dialogue between technology suppliers, integrators, and decision-makers shaping the next generation of European defence capabilities and aims to open doors between civil industry and defence procurement, providing practical insights.

The portable solution was designed for a range of applications, from spectrum awareness and emissions control (EMCON) to in-field interference localisation, area and personnel protection, search and rescue operations, and early anomaly detection. When combined with the Rohde & Schwarz software environment, signals can be visualised directly on maps, multiple units can be networked for automatic triangulation, alerting can be configured and task sequences automated. The ruggedness and environmental specifications meet the MIL-STD-810H military standard for climate and mechanical stress, as well as MIL-STD-461G for EMC. Together with the IP43 protection rating, this ensures reliable operation under harsh conditions.

"With the MP007, we are delivering high-precision direction finding technology in a mobile format designed for field deployment," explains Dr. Michael Lorenz, Product Manager for Spectrum Monitoring Systems at Rohde & Schwarz. "Tactical teams are provided with a precise, comprehensive system that integrates into our software environment. The tool-free setup and automated features streamline deployment and data analysis, which increases operational agility in the field."
