Germany is moving beyond experimental laser trials. Rheinmetall and MBDA are developing a complete high-energy laser weapon system for the German Navy, covering the operational chain from target detection and tracking to engagement. The decisive engineering challenge, however, is not simply generating more laser power. It is turning light, sensors, software, energy and cooling into a reliable naval weapon.

For years, military laser systems were presented as weapons of the future. They appeared at exhibitions, in laboratory trials and in carefully prepared demonstrations. The technology was repeatedly described as being close to operational use, yet the decisive step from experimental equipment to a qualified weapon remained difficult.
