The Swiss Federal Office for Defence Procurement, armasuisse, has confirmed Brillux Industrial Coatings as a certified coatings supplier. Industrial coaters can now coat components for military applications within the area of responsibility of the Swiss Armed Forces using powder-based coatings. The Premium Polyester Powder 5936 is available in F9 or HR quality in the standard colour shades, along with additional products for a consistent coating system.

When it comes to coating components for military applications, wet coatings have so far been the standard. However, against the backdrop of rising demand for military goods, powder coating offers enormous potential, if only because of the higher number of powder coaters. For the first time, armasuisse is creating the conditions within its area of responsibility for components to be coated using certified powder coatings. Brillux Industrial Coatings is the first manufacturer to be approved by the responsible defence procurement authority as a supplier of powder coatings for military applications.

The certification covers Brillux Industrial Coatings’ Premium Polyester Powder Coating 5936. It was developed specifically for military applications and is available in both F9 and HR quality. The highly weather-resistant powder coating is suitable for outdoor use, including under extreme climatic conditions, on various metallic substrates. It offers gloss and colour stability, corrosion protection properties and chemical resistance.

The F9 quality offers an additional function relevant to military applications. It provides excellent camouflage performance in the near-IR spectral range. The product is approved in the colour shades RAL 6014-F9 Gelboliv (Yellow olive), RAL 6031-F9 Bronzegrün (Bronze green), RAL 8027-F9 Lederbraun (Leather brown) and RAL 9021-F9 Teerschwarz (Tar black). In HR quality, the powder coating is approved in the colour shades RAL 1013 Perlweiß (Pearl white), RAL 7012 Basaltgrau (Basalt grey), RAL 9001 Cremeweiß (Cream white), RAL 9010 Reinweiß (Pure white) and RAL 6014 Gelboliv (Yellow olive). In both qualities, the topcoat is complemented by a light grey primer coating (Korro-Protect EP 5816-7100). If this is not sufficient for galvanised or highly outgassing substrates, an epoxy corrosion protection primer (Primer Powder EP 5819-7101) is available. This enables industrial coaters to use a continuous coating system with powder coatings optimally matched to one another.

Changing the coating process for military vehicle components, equipment items or transport and accommodation containers from wet coating to powder coating offers numerous advantages. These include a VOC-compliant coating process completely free of volatile organic compounds, easier processing without extensive preparatory work and lower coating consumption due to higher efficiency. Since long drying times are eliminated, process times are reduced. A high degree of automation also ensures fast and reliable processing.

Approval by armasuisse adds to the existing approvals for Brillux Industrial Coatings’ military powder coatings. In 2017, the manufacturer was the first to receive approval from the Bundeswehr’s Wehrwissenschaftliches Institut für Werk- und Betriebsstoffe (WIWeB) in accordance with the German Defence Equipment Standard (VG 95211). The company’s range of F9-quality polyester powder coatings includes RAL 6031 Bronzegrün (Bronze green) as the base colour for Flecktarn camouflage, the two Flecktarn coatings RAL 8027 Lederbraun (Leather brown) and RAL 9021 Teerschwarz (Tar black), as well as RAL 1039 Sandbeige (Sand beige) as a camouflage colour for desert and steppe regions. The F9 range is complemented by RAL 1013 Perlweiß (Pearl white) and RAL 9005 Tiefschwarz (Deep black) in HR quality.
