The armaments group Rheinmetall is inaugurating its new artillery ammunition plant in Unterlüß in Lower Saxony today. Series production of the 155-millimeter projectiles is also due to start shortly, it is reported. Following a trial run, the production volume will now be gradually ramped up. This year, 25,000 shells will be manufactured. From 2027, the aim is to produce 350,000 units. Including production in other plants, Rheinmetall would then like to be able to offer a capacity of 1.5 million shells in around two years.

Unterlüß becomes an important artillery ammunition site

However, Rheinmetall has been present in Unterlüß for a long time. Until now, however, the arms manufacturer has operated a rather small production area for artillery ammunition there, as well as for the Puma infantry fighting vehicle. It also has access to a kilometer-long firing range. The production of 155-millimeter bullets is now gaining significant weight there. The demand for such ammunition is known to have skyrocketed with the start of the war in Ukraine in 2022. And Rheinmetall is one of the most important suppliers for Ukraine. Incidentally, Group CEO Armin Papperger is expecting Vice Chancellor and Federal Minister of Finance Lars Klingbeil (SPD), Federal Minister of Defense Boris Pistorius (SPD) and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte to attend the inauguration, according to reports.
