German defence group Rheinmetall and Swiss shipping company MSC are set to acquire Romania’s Mangalia shipyard on the Black Sea coast for around €138 million, expanding Rheinmetall’s naval ambitions and creating a dual-use manufacturing base in south-eastern Europe.

The partners have won an auction for the yard, located south of Constanța. The transaction is expected to close within weeks. Rheinmetall plans to modernise the facility and divide it into separate production and security areas, allowing civilian and military vessels to be built at the same site.An initial focus will be four ships ordered by the Romanian government: two 96-metre offshore patrol vessels and two 43-metre diver support vessels. Beyond these projects, Rheinmetall wants Mangalia to become a regional hub for naval construction, serving both domestic and international customers.

Another step for Rheinmetall towards ship production

The investment also reflects Romania’s efforts to strengthen its own defence industry. The government has linked military procurement to local production, technology transfer and the revival of the financially troubled yard. Mangalia’s redevelopment could therefore support employment and industrial capacity on NATO’s Black Sea flank. For Rheinmetall, the move represents a further step beyond its traditional land-systems business. Partnering with a major commercial shipping company could help it combine civilian shipbuilding expertise with military production requirements. However, the scale of future investment, production capacity and additional naval orders has yet to be specified.
