Europe's defence industry faces a strategic supply chain vulnerability because critical permanent magnets remain deeply embedded in Chinese dominated value chains despite apparently diversified supplier networks.
China has recently placed several US companies operating in the rare earth and defence sectors on an export control list, including MP Materials and USA Rare Earth. Both companies represent efforts to establish independent Western supply chains for rare earth elements and permanent magnets.
