Repeated drone alerts and crashes have occurred in the Baltic states recently. To prevent such incidents, Lithuania wants to learn from Ukraine by using “Sky Fortress”.

Lithuania is testing an airspace surveillance system developed in Ukraine to protect against drones. The “Sky Fortress” system is designed to detect low-flying objects. “Airborne threats are changing rapidly, so we are adapting our solutions accordingly. Rather than developing everything from scratch, we are adapting systems that are already in use in Ukraine,” said Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas. In the fifth year of its defence against a Russian invasion, Ukraine is regarded as one of the world’s leading countries in drone warfare.

According to Lithuanian officials, “Sky Fortress” uses artificial intelligence to detect and track low-flying drones and cruise missiles based on their acoustic or electromagnetic signatures. The system can classify detected objects in real time, according to a statement from the Defence Ministry of the Baltic EU and NATO member state in Vilnius.

During the war in Ukraine, several drone-related incidents have already occurred in Lithuania and the other two Baltic states, Estonia and Latvia. Ukrainian drones that had strayed off course while Kyiv was attempting to attack targets in north-western Russia have repeatedly entered Baltic airspace and crashed. In the past, drones of Russian manufacture have also flown into Lithuania from Belarus.
