Real-Time Innovations (RTI), the software framework company for the ‘Smart World’, has released Connext TSS 4.2.0 for use in production. This latest version will form the basis for developing future avionics systems. It also provides essential architectural enhancements that support the Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA) and the Sensor Open Systems Architecture (SOSA). These approaches are becoming increasingly important in the development of modern land vehicles, too.

Connext TSS 4.2.0 builds on the functionality and flexibility of its predecessors. The enhancements simplify development, particularly with regard to handling the complex data types found in modern data models. Connext TSS 4.2.0 is based on the FACE (Future Airborne Capability Environment) Technical Standard, Edition 3.2. This standard enables the integration of components from different suppliers to be integrated within a common, open system architecture, thereby improving support for open, modular architectures. The Transport Protocol Module (TPM) of the Transport Services Segment (TSS) provides a standardised interface to the underlying communication technology for this purpose. With Connext TSS 4.2.0, RTI has expanded the TPM’s capabilities to encompass XML-based configuration support.

Furthermore, the new version features integrated thread-safety functionality. While customers can still implement thread safety themselves, Connext TSS now provides this functionality as standard. This reduces development effort while fully supporting multi-threaded environments. Additionally, RTI has increased code coverage in unit and integration tests. This improves the robustness of the solution and supports development teams, particularly those working on demanding avionics applications.

Extended support for operating systems

As well as offering a simpler and faster implementation of thread safety, Connext TSS 4.2.0 provides extended support for standardised platforms. To this end, RTI provides the source code so that customers can create their own ports. Numerous OSS compliant operating systems are also supported out of the box. This expanded out-of the-box platform support makes it easier for development teams to efficiently cover different target and development environments. The following operating systems are also supported: Windows 11 (as a development platform only; not FACE-compliant), LynxOS-178 and Ubuntu 24.04 LTS.

Foundation for scalable and interoperable systems

With Connext TSS 4.2.0, RTI demonstrates its commitment to further developing modular, open system architectures. The new version offers development teams a clear path to production-ready solutions and supports them in developing scalable, interoperable, and efficient systems for future avionics and defence applications.
