The Lithuanian army wants to upgrade its vehicle fleet with military vehicles from Germany. To strengthen its defense capabilities, the armed forces of the Baltic EU and NATO country will purchase special trucks from Daimler Truck and off-road vehicles from Mercedes-Benz worth around one billion euros. According to the Ministry of Defense in Vilnius, an agreement was signed with the local representative of the German car manufacturer.

The G-Class vehicles from Mercedes-Benz and the Zetros, Arocs and Unimog military truck models from Daimler Truck are to be delivered between 2026 and 2032. The procurement is to be financed in part with the help of an armaments loan from the EU's so-called Safe Program, according to a statement.

One of the army's largest investments

According to the ministry, the purchase is "one of the largest investments in the logistics of the Lithuanian armed forces". The Lithuanian army intends to use the vehicles to transport troops, weapons and supplies.

Lithuania borders the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad and Russia's ally Belarus. The war in Ukraine is seen as a direct threat to national security in the Baltic state. The government in Vilnius has therefore increased military spending and is massively arming the army.
