The arms manufacturer Rheinmetall announced today from Düsseldorf (Germany) that it has established a joint venture with Finnish satellite experts Iceye for the planned construction of satellites. The focus is on so-called SAR satellites (SAR = Synthetic Aperture Radar), which can provide the military with highly precise reconnaissance images. The joint venture is named Rheinmetall Iceye Space Solutions and is based in Neuss (Germany), where an existing Rheinmetall automotive supplier plant is to be gradually converted to defence production.

Rheinmetall expertise boosts SAR satellite manufacturing

Rheinmetall holds 60 percent of the shares in the new venture, while the Finns hold 40 percent, as further reported. Operational business operations are set to begin before the end of the year. The first satellite is expected to roll off the production line in Neuss next year. While Iceye already builds satellites used, among other places, in Ukraine, with Rheinmetall on board, these are expected to be produced more quickly and thus in greater quantities. Additionally, Rheinmetall's sales network is intended to help sell more satellites than was previously possible.
