A promising start-up called Mynaric once started out in Munich, focusing on laser radio technology. Then things went wrong.

The US company Rocket Lab has taken over the Munich-based laser radio specialist Mynaric, which is in difficulties. There were obviously no German applicants. Mynaric had more difficulty with series production than expected, which triggered the misery. According to Rocket Lab, the Federal Ministry of Economics has already given its approval. According to the US company, the purchase price is around 155 million euros. However, this will not be paid entirely in cash, but will largely come from Rocket Lab shares. However, Mynaric's headquarters are to remain in Munich and become Rocket Lab's first foothold in Europe, as other media have already reported.

A start-up with technically mature systems

As the name suggests, Rocket Lab is a rocket manufacturer whose Electron rocket has now launched a good 250 satellites into space. The company is now also developing its own satellites - and Mynaric fits in very well with this business area! The Bavarian start-up has developed laser radio terminals for tap-proof communication and data connections. Rocket Lab would like to install these in 36 US military satellites, among others, which the government in Washington has already ordered.

The Mynaric systems are said to be technically mature and ready for use. In terms of volume, the order is worth around 1.3 billion dollars. Mynaric is a high-tech spin-off from the German Aerospace Center and has been listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange since 2017 and on the New York Nasdaq since 2021.
