Steyr Motors has signed a binding agreement to acquire all shares in the Danish Bukh A/S and the Danish SLC Ejendomme ApS. The former is a leading international specialist for SOLAS-certified engines (Safety of Life at Sea) for lifeboats and military boats. The Austrians are thus taking a strategic development step to position themselves more broadly and scalably in the field of mission-critical marine systems.

Steyer now offers a wide range of marine engines

By integrating Bukh from Krusaa, Steyr Motors is also expanding its range of available engines from the previous 120 to 300 hp to 24 to 700 hp in the future. For the first time, this will create an almost complete portfolio for marine engines, making Steyer Motors a "full range" supplier, so to speak. The expanded product range therefore opens up new opportunities for international tenders across several performance levels and increases the sales potential.

The SOLAS market has high barriers to entry, which can now be overcome with the new acquisition. The market is also known for its lucrative business in spare parts and services. Bukh also operates in China. With Bukh's sales volume, Steyr Motors is pushing this area up fourfold. At the same time, the supply chain will be strengthened and access to the Asian and South American markets will be gained.

Further advantages for the market with SOLAS systems

The extended power range also opens up additional opportunities, which are expected to arise primarily in the area of unmanned surface vessels (USV). Steyr Motors is already experiencing a strong increase in demand, but has not been able to serve all projects to date due to the limited power range. With Bukh, however, this is now possible. At the same time, the takeover strengthens Steyr Motors' position as a leading SOLAS player in the maritime defence sector.

The combination of Bukh's SOLAS integration expertise with Steyr Motors' technological know-how and basic engines creates a basis for accelerated development cycles, shortened time-to-market processes and more efficient use of R&D resources. Overall, Steyr Motors expects the integration to result in a sustainable improvement in operating profitability and a structural strengthening of EBIT margins in the coming years.
