US President Donald Trump has signed a memorandum aimed at dramatically increasing the number of commercial space launches and re-entries in the United States. The White House is targeting at least 1,000 annually by 2030, compared with 178 launches last year—already ten times the 2013 figure.

Federal agencies have been instructed to identify government land suitable for new launch and re-entry sites, accelerate permitting and environmental reviews, and ensure sufficient wireless spectrum. They are also expected to develop space transport infrastructure jointly with private-sector partners. Requests to launch foreign commercial vehicles from US territory will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Trump also wants government agencies to avoid space transport activities that could “preclude, discourage, or compete with” US commercial operators, unless required for public safety or national security. Cabinet departments have 90 days to identify potential sites on federal property and designate priority airspace for critical launch corridors.

SpaceX will further profit

The initiative is likely to benefit US launch providers, particularly SpaceX. Elon Musk’s company conducted 170 launches in 2025, deploying around 2,500 satellites. In May, the head of the Federal Aviation Administration said SpaceX was aiming for as many as 10,000 launches a year within five years.  The move could increase pressure on Europe’s governments and space companies. ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher recently warned of an emerging bottleneck in European launch and re-entry capacity, as AAD reported.
